Session 2 – Parkinson’s Disease
Time: 12.15 pm – 2.15 pm CPD: 2 hours
Presenters: Ann Dodd, Neurological Nurse Specialist/Educator Primary Health, THO-NW
Overview:
- Obtain an understanding of Parkinsonism, aetiology and diagnosis
- Ability to identify symptoms f Parkinson’s Disease, domains of nursing assessment and implement appropriate nursing management strategies
- Describe the different Parkinson’s medications, wearing off and side effects including dyskinesias
- Obtain knowledge of where to find Parkinson’s Disease resources to support your practice and referral pathways

- The right to autonomy
- What is valid consent?
- Minors and consent, the mature minor, minors under the care of others
- Exception of necessity
Claims which may arise where no consent is obtained

Session 1 – Advanced Emergency Management
Time: 8.30 am – 11.45 am CPD: 3 hours
Presenter: Craig Shennan, Life Support Coordinator, Integrated Learning and Simulation Centre
Overview:
The ALS Algorithm
- Drugs used in cardiac arrest
- Defibrillation (effect, purpose and importance)
- Physiology behind the arrest and the significance of CPR/BLS and its impact on patient survival
- PEA the non-shockable side of the ALS algorithm as this is a major cause of in-hospital cardiac arrests
- VF and VT (causes and treatment)
As part of the management of deteriorating patients to understand 12 lead ECGs in scope of chest pain
- Segment changes consistent with AMI and ischemia
- To be able to recognise inferior, anterior, lateral and posterior infarct
- To be able to recognise inferior, anterior, lateral and posterior ischemia
- Understand the time critical need to get help fast
Airway Management
- Bag/Valve/Mask ventilation and airway management
- LMA rescue airway in the context of cardiac arrest (simulation demonstration)

Session 2 – Paediatric Emergencies

Taking the fear out of dealing with unstable children is almost impossible
- This session aims to improve clinical assessment skills and develop sound clinical observation skills in every practitioner that meets and greets paediatric patients in and out of their normal working environment – from First Aid Care to Advanced Life Support
