RHH Double Shifts
ANF wishes to make comment on a memo circulated by Jane Holden, CEO, in regards to recent newspaper articles.
Jane Holden indicates that ANF has either misrepresented or misunderstood double shift data which had been provided to us at a meeting with Management. ANF has done neither.
The data provided to ANF indicates that approximately 120 double shifts were worked in January 2012 and 125 in February 2012.
These figures are indeed half of the figures which were recorded at the same time last year and until January of this year; there certainly was a downward trend in double shifts.
However, since this time the RHH has lost 96 nurses. Fixed term contracts have come to an end with nurses not having these renewed, many of last year’s graduates have not been reemployed and an alteration to how leave is replaced on the wards is leaving fewer nurses available to replace unplanned leave.
There now appears to be an upward trend as of January 2012. It is unclear at this point if next month will see this figure return to its downward trend or continue to increase.
Double Shifts are NOT acceptable. Within the Public Sector, double shifts are treated as a ‘serious clinical incident’ and as such are recorded on the Electronic Incident Monitoring System (EIMS).
Double Shifts should NOT be worked. Tired nurses are a risk to safe patient care and this should be the final option when looking for replacement staff.
There is NO ‘manageable level’ of double shifts.

why are double shifts being worked when casual pool nurses like myself are not getting work.
